Hartebeespoort HARTBEESPOORT DAM, MAGALIESBURG, RUSTENBURG Eastern Bonjanala Region
Undoubtedly the most beautiful region of the North West Province, Bojanala borders on Gauteng. It includes within its boundaries Hartebeespoort Dam, thepicturesqueMagaliesberg Mountain rangeand thePilansberg National Park.A large part of this region is bushveld and it is dotted with game reserves and farms. The Pilanesberg National Park attracts many visitors who long for the 'Big 5' experience, without having to travel far. Sun City, Lost City as well as The Cradle of Humankind that stretches from Hartbeespoort Dam right up to Rustenburg.
Potchefstroom POTCHEFSTROOM, KLERKSDORP, VENTERSDORP Southern Region
The southern region is also predominantly a crop-growing area that produces maize, sunflowers, tobacco, cotton and citrus fruits. It is also the region with the most economic activity. The Vaal River flanking its southern border,provides a collection of lodges and guest houses for effortless time spent fly fishing and angling, as well as other water activities. This part of the North West is promoted as an outdoor adventurer's delight, and it is not hard to imagine, given the many opportunities to hike, mountain bike, white water raft, climb mountains and generally enjoy the great outdoors. The Bloemhof Dam and Boskop Dam Reserves offer the magnetism of water. Potchefstroom is situated on the banks of the Mooi River.
Mafikeng MAFIKENG, MADIKWE, MMAMBATHO Central Region
The central region of the North West Province is dominated by bushveld and savannah plains, the fertile grasslands subject to fields of maize, sunflowers and ground nuts, as well as cattle and game farming. The region, although apparently flat and dry, is able to sustain farming as it does because of the large volumes of quality water stored in groundwater springs. The central region borders on Botswana, dominated by the capital of the province, Mafikeng, and the Groot Marico Bushveld area, an area romanticised in the stories by the author Herman Charles Bosman.
Vryburg VRYBURG, TAUNG Bophirima Region
Here you can get closer to nature with vast open spaces and the famous fossil discoveries, the Taung skull. The Bophirima Region is a large agricultural district. Mining and agriculture are the 2 principle economies here. Thus this area is called the "Texas" of South Africa. Vast areas of savannah bushland have been converted into privately owned game reserves, and Bophirima is an excellent place to see lion, buffalo, rhino as well as smaller antelope and other game, whilst also experiencing the luxury of safari getaways. The area is popular with those seeking adventure and 4x4 routes
