Undoubtedly the most beautiful region of the North West Province, Bojanala borders on Gauteng. It includes within its boundaries Hartebeespoort Dam, thepicturesqueMagaliesberg Mountain rangeand thePilansberg National Park.A large part of this region is bushveld and it is dotted with game reserves and farms. The Pilanesberg National Park attracts many visitors who long for the 'Big 5' experience, without having to travel far. Sun City, Lost City as well as The Cradle of Humankind that stretches from Hartbeespoort Dam right up to Rustenburg.

Hartbeespoort Dam

Surrounded by the beautiful Magaliesberg mountain range, Hartbeespoort Dam is a very popular weekend getaway. The De Wildt Cheetah & Wildlife Trust facility has gained international recognition for bringing the cheetah back from the brink of extinction through its captive breeding programmes. Over the past two decades the centre's efforts have resulted in the major achievement.

Lesedi Cultural Village

Lesedi, which means for 'light', was initiated in 1995 as a tourist attraction and today features five traditional dwellings, each representing a South African culture: Pedi, Zulu, Xhosa, Basotho and Ndebele. Each of these families lives here permanently, looking after cows, chickens and tourism.

Silkaatsnek Game reserve

The 17 000 hectare privately owned Silkaatsnek Nature Reserve lies in the foothills of the Magaliesberg in the North West province, between Brits and Hartbeespoort, making it an easy break away venue for weekends for those living in both Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Pilansberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park, which covers some 55 000 hectare, is the fourth largest in southern Africa. This malaria-free park is perched on the eroded vestiges of an alkaline volcanic crater - one of only three such craters in the world. The park boasts healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino etc.

Cradle of Human Kind

The Cradle of Humankind Site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossilised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in a warm shallow sea about 2.3 billion years ago.

The Royal Bafokeng Stadium

The Royal Bafokeng Stadium will host first and second round matches for the FIFA™ World Cup in 2010. Located in Rustenburg in the North West Province, Royal Bafokeng was opened in 1999 and completely funded by the Royal Bafokeng community. The capacity of the Royal Bafokeng was increased to 42,000.


Rustenburg is situated some 112 km north-west of Johannesburg, at the foot of the Magaliesberg. It is the third oldest town of the old Transvaal Province and has numerous places of interest. The streets are lined with jacaranda trees
